Hanoi restores 19th-century houses in Old Quarter

The rehabilitation project of a series of old houses on Ta Hien street in Hanoi's Old Quarter wrapped up on December 29.
The VND15 billion-invested project, which was carried out one year ago by Vietnamese and French experts, included 25 houses whose designs are a mixture of Vietnamese, Chinese and French colonial period architecture.
According to architect Nguyen Hoang Long, head of the project, it took four years to study the site’s architecture as well as to discuss and negotiate with the houses’ owners.
“Unlike restoration projects on public locations and cultural heritages such as temples and pagodas, it is necessary to pay attention to the residents’ opinions and needs,” Long is quoted as saying in The Thao & Van Hoa Newspaper this week.

Ta Hien Street together with other five streets nearby, including Hang Buom, Hang Giay, Luong Ngoc Quyen, Ma May, and Dao Duy Tu, will be part of a walking area for tourists in the capital on weekends.
