Rescue workers on a road near the small town of Temascaltepec said on Saturday that they had dug out 11 bodies from the mudslide that crushed several cars.
Police said several more people were likely still buried in their vehicles.
Heavy rains have been pounding much of Mexico for days, triggering mudslides in the western state of Michoaca, causing rivers to overflow and setting off flooding in the capital and nearby states.
