Vietnam was estimated to have reaped a total of $3.4 billion from exports to Africa in 2011, rising 91 percent from 2010, according to news from Vietnam Trade Office.
However, export value to the African markets only accounted for 3.5 percent of the country's total export turnover in the year, the trade office said, noting that South Africa, Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Algeria are the Vietnam's 6 import staples in Africa.
In details, exports to South Africa reached $1.86 billion in 2011, up 277 percent from 2010. Of which, precious stones and metals accounted for $1.5 billion, phones and spare-parts accounted for $106.8 million, footwear reached $61.87 million, computers and spare-parts were $29.38 million.
The export turnover to Egypt reached $256.3 million in the year, up 46 percent from 2010. In which, seafood products accounted for $62.86 million, pepper reached $31.51 million, fiber and thread were $31.23 million.
Export revenues to Senegal were $190.2 million in 2011, making an on-year rise of 136 percent. Of which, exports of rice reached $169.7 million, vehicles and spare-parts accounted for $11.2 million.
Vietnam also earned $146.5 million from exports to the Ivory Coast in 2011despite its political instability in the early months of the year, making a rise of 9 percent from a year earlier. In which, rice exports reaped $138.8 million.
Export turnover to Ghana was estimated at $120.3 million in 2011, up 22 percent on year. Of which, rice accounted for $77 million, textiles reached $7 million.
The Southeast Asian country also earned $100.4 million from exports to Algeria, up 32 percent from 2010. In which, exports of coffee accounted for $51.4 million and exports of rice were $19.7 million.
Vietnam also recorded export turnover decrease in some African markets in 2011 including Angola with $68 million ( down 39 percent on year), Nigeria with $70.5 million ( down 36 percent on year).
