Mekong Delta exports 6.1 mln tonnnes of rice

The Mekong Delta region has exported an additional 91,000 tonnes of rice, bringing the total rice exports so far this year to 6.1 million tonnes worth 3.1 billion USD.

The figures reflect year-on-year increases of 7 percent in volume and 16 percent in value.

Asia remains the region’s largest rice importer with 63 percent of the volume, of which Indonesia and the Philippines alone brought 40 percent of the region’s total rice exports. Africa ranks second with 24 percent.

This year, Mekong Delta region harvested bumper rice crops of 23 million tonnes, up 1.5 million tonnes against last year, making up 55 percent of the country’s total rice output./.
